Our commitment to sustainability- On The Pigs Back Douglas

On the Pigs Back Douglas and English Market are very proud of our achievement of being finalists in the Yes Chef ‘Most Sustainable’ awards. This along with winning ‘Best Café' proved to be a fantastic night for the business. Both achievements are down to the meticulous work of all the staff over the years. Environmentally sound food is not just about the farm, food artisans, restaurants and other food businesses all have a role to play.

Sustainable business is something we take very serious here at On the Pigs Back with our goal of being environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable, while reducing the impact we have on the environment. When you walk through the door of our Douglas Café you will instantly get a sense of some of the ways we are ensuring we remain sustainable.

Our seating and tables are all handmade in Cork with amazing wood, which is durable, renewable, sustainable, and of course beautiful. The restaurant itself has a retail section filled with amazing local artisan foods, from chutneys and chocolates to sauces and ingredients you will find products that will sure blow you away.

Our head Chef has recently been accepted into Euro Toques list of amazing chefs, in which one of the codes of honour is ‘Chefs must respect the principles of seasonality where possible and source food as locally as possible. They must know where their food ingredients come from and ensure they are of the highest quality, produced conscientiously, with respect for the environment and animal welfare.’ This is seen throughout our menu, and ingredients as we only use the best of local ingredients when possible. By buying locally we support local jobs, assist the local economy and reduce our food miles.

By reducing our food miles, we leave less of a carbon footprint and ensure our food is as fresh as possible. We ensure similar practices also in our market as when we purchase our French cheese and charcuterie, we use shipping rather than by air which reduces the carbon footprint by almost 50 times.
